Decoding Supercar Specs: Horsepower, Torque and Launch Control Explained Without the Engineering Degree 

You do not need to know how an internal combustion engine works to enjoy driving one properly. But it helps to know what horsepower, torque and launch control actually feel like once you are sat behind the wheel, because that is the difference between picking a car because the name sounds fast and picking one because you understand what it is going to do to you the moment you put your foot down.

Cutting through the jargon 

Horsepower, torque, 0-60, bhp, launch control – supercar marketing loves a number, and it is easy to assume they all mean roughly the same thing. They do not. 

Horsepower (bhp) is a measure of how much work an engine can do over time – broadly, how fast it can go once it is up to speed.

Torque is the twisting force the engine produces, and it is torque that you actually feel first: it is what pins you into the seat the instant you accelerate, before horsepower takes over to keep building speed.

A car with huge torque and modest horsepower feels brutal off the line. A car with huge horsepower and more modest torque tends to build speed in a long, relentless surge rather than a single punch. 

0-60mph is the most quoted figure of all, and the least useful on its own. It tells you nothing about how a car feels at 40mph on a B-road, which is where you will spend most of your day. Two cars with an identical 0-60 time can feel completely different depending on how their power and torque are delivered – which is exactly why the two cars below make a better teaching example than any spec sheet on its own. 

None of this needs to be memorised. It just helps to know that when someone says “it’s got 600 bhp”, they are describing top-end pace, and when they say “it pulls like a train”, they are talking about torque. 

What horsepower actually feels like, car by car 

Numbers on a page do not translate to sensation, so here is the honest version, using cars from our own fleet. 

At the more accessible end sits the Range Rover Sport SVR – 542bhp and 516lb-ft (700Nm) of torque, 0-60mph in around 4.5 seconds. That is genuinely, seriously fast for a car this size. On a clear stretch of road, putting your foot down produces a firm, continuous shove that keeps building as the revs climb, delivered with the composure of something that also has to carry passengers and luggage. It is fast enough to be a proper occasion. It is not fast enough to be frightening if you respect it. 

Step up to the Bentley Continental GTC, and the 4.0-litre W12 brings 542bhp and a substantial 663lb-ft (900Nm) of torque to the table – enough to hit 60mph in 4 seconds despite weighing considerably more than either of the Lamborghinis in our fleet. This is what a grand tourer’s version of speed looks like: less about the numbers on paper, more about how effortlessly it deploys them. 

Move into Lamborghini territory and the character of the acceleration changes entirely. The Huracán Performante Spyder produces 631bhp and 443lb-ft (600Nm) of torque, reaching 60mph in the low three-second bracket – and because the power comes from a naturally aspirated V10 that wants to rev to 8,000rpm, the sensation builds progressively rather than arriving all at once. The Aventador SVJ, at the top of the fleet, produces 759bhp and 531lb-ft (720Nm) of torque from its 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12, and gets from a standing start to 60mph in under three seconds. At that point it stops feeling like speed and starts feeling like force. The shove from a standing start is immediate and physical, the sensation of the road disappearing beneath you compresses, and the car reaches motorway speeds in the time it takes most cars to leave a roundabout. Passengers audibly react. Drivers tend to go quiet for a second, then grin. 

The gap between “very fast” and “genuinely extreme” is not a straight line. It accelerates, if you will forgive the pun, the higher up the numbers you go. 

Why two similar power figures can feel completely different 

Here is where torque earns its place in this article rather than just being a footnote to horsepower. 

Take the Lamborghini Urus and the Huracán Performante Spyder – 641bhp and 631bhp respectively, close enough that horsepower alone would suggest they feel almost identical. They do not. The Urus produces 627lb-ft (850Nm) of torque, delivered low down from its twin-turbocharged V8, which is why it launches to 60mph in around three seconds despite being an SUV: the torque is simply there the moment you ask for it. The Huracán Performante, with its naturally aspirated V10, produces noticeably less torque at 443lb-ft (600Nm), but delivers it higher up the rev range and keeps pulling harder the closer the engine gets to its 8,000rpm redline. One car shoves you back in your seat immediately and holds that shove. The other builds towards a crescendo you have to chase with your right foot. 

Neither is “better”. They are simply different tools, and knowing the difference is exactly how you pick the right car for the road you are about to drive rather than just the biggest number on the page. 

The magic of launch control 

If horsepower and torque are the ingredients, launch control is the moment you get to taste all of them at once. 

Launch control is a system built into the car’s electronics that manages wheel spin, engine revs and gear changes automatically, so the car can put down its maximum acceleration from a standing start without the driver having to feather the throttle or fight for grip. In practice, you hold the brake, build the revs to a set point, release the brake, and the car does the rest – launching harder and more consistently than most drivers could manage manually. Cars like the Huracán Performante, the Aventador SVJ and the Urus all come from the factory with a dedicated launch control system built in, precisely because their torque figures above are more than a human foot can meter perfectly through a throttle pedal from a standstill. 

It is not a trick or a gimmick. It exists because getting maximum acceleration off the line reliably is genuinely difficult to do by feel alone, even for a skilled driver. Used properly, on a private road or closed environment where it is safe to do so, it is one of the few moments in a hire day where you feel the entire spec sheet arrive at once – horsepower, torque and grip, all working together in about three seconds. 

Pick your weapon of choice 

You do not need to be an engineer to feel the difference between a 542bhp Range Rover Sport SVR and a 759bhp Aventador SVJ, or to understand why the Urus and the Huracán Performante can share almost identical horsepower and still feel nothing alike.
